Wildflower Season in Perth, Australia

Western Australia is home to one of the most remarkable concentrations of biodiversity on Earth. From July to September especially, as spring arrives, the once-arid land bursts back to life in a spectacular natural phenomenon: more than 12,000 species of wildflowers blooming at once, forming one of the longest and most complete wildflower trails in the world.

The journey begins in Perth, where spring reveals nature at its most dramatic, starting right in the heart of the city at Kings Park and Botanic Garden, one of the world’s largest inner-city parks. Throughout September, the Kings Park Festival showcases sweeping fields of Everlastings, their pink and white petals blooming so densely they resemble a natural carpet stretching alongside the city skyline and the beautiful Swan River.

About half an hour from the city centre, John Forrest National Park in the Perth Hills is awash with vivid native orchids festooning the branches of ancient forest and nestled among giant granite boulders. Along the shaded nature trails, look out for the Kangaroo Paw, Western Australia’s floral emblem, prized for its unusual shape and velvety red-and-green texture - which is found only in this region.

After a day immersed in nature, round things off with the fine wines and food of the Swan Valley. Local cuisine is renowned for its distinctive character and is the perfect way to elevate a mid-year break into something truly uplifting.
