Wander the Colourful Seaside Villages of Cinque Terre, Italy

Pastel-hued houses cascade down dramatic cliffs above the deep blue Mediterranean. For many, this image is instantly recognisable as Cinque Terre, the UNESCO World Heritage stretch of Italy’s Ligurian coast.

The five ancient fishing villages — Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare — each possess their own distinct character, together forming a scene as vivid as a grand oil painting co-created by nature and human hands. In July and August, the region bursts into colour and vibrancy, welcoming travellers to surrender to the charm of a classic southern European summer.

For those craving the freshness of the Mediterranean, Fegina Beach in Monterosso al Mare is the most popular spot, with the longest, widest stretch of sand and full amenities. The natural harbour at Vernazza and the rocky cove at Manarola are also favourites for cliff-jumping beneath the glow of sun-drenched, candy-coloured houses. Whether it’s kayaking along the cliffs or sailing out at sunset, the water-based activities here are an excellent way to shake off the fatigue of the year’s first half.

After a full day by the sea, don’t miss wandering the narrow lanes to sample the freshest seafood, then wind up the evening with a glass of crisp white wine as the last light fades into the water — the perfect way to elevate a mid-year break into something truly inspired.
