Samet Nang Chi Viewpoint, Phang Nga, Thailand

What if you could swap the sound of your alarm for the stillness of early morning above Phang Nga Bay, the sky shifting through purple and gold as the sun comes up over the Andaman Sea?

Samet Nang Chi Viewpoint makes that possible, and it is one of the most quietly rewarding experiences southern Thailand has to offer.

The view from here takes in dozens of limestone karsts and islands scattered across the bay, fringed by lush mangrove forests. It changes beautifully throughout the day: soft and golden at sunrise, sharp and detailed in the midday light, and on clear nights, open enough to the sky for proper stargazing. A small café offers shade and refreshment for day visitors, and there are several scenic spots around the viewpoint worth exploring at a leisurely pace.

From nearby Ban Hin Rom Pier, longtail boats head out into Phang Nga National Park, passing through mangrove channels and visiting some of the bay's most celebrated landmarks—James Bond Island (Khao Tapu), Ko Hong, the stilted village of Ko Panyi, and Khao Ping Kan.

Getting there: Drive from Phuket Airport — approximately one hour.

To many, Amsterdam evokes a familiar and thoroughly appealing picture—a web of canals threading through a city of museums, art galleries, flower markets, cheese stalls, and buildings that have stood for centuries. All of that is real and worth every moment. But Amsterdam has another side that tends to surprise first-time visitors: a capital city so close to nature that a short walk or a few minutes on a bicycle is all it takes to leave the bustle behind and settle into an entirely different pace.

As the snow retreats, the valleys come alive with wildflowers, the waterfalls run loud and full, and the mountain peaks remain dusted white above it all, a combination that the winter crowds rarely get to experience.
