If you’re a fan of Studio Ghibli, Jiufen is a destination you simply can’t miss. It’s often said that the iconic bathhouse in Spirited Away was inspired by Amei Teahouse, the famous red-lantern-lined teahouse perched on a hillside in this charming old village.
Once you arrive in Jiufen, start your visit at the viewpoint at the entrance of the old main street. It offers sweeping views, especially beautiful in the late afternoon when the golden light shimmers across the sea. From there, wander into the narrow, winding market alleys, where hundreds of food stalls await. Sample everything from savoury snacks to sweet treats, bubble tea and countless local favourites. You’ll also find shops selling souvenirs, crafts and curios of every kind.
After nibbling your way through the market, you’ll reach a small junction that descends toward one of Jiufen’s most photographed spots. Look back and you’ll see Amei Teahouse glowing above you - an enchanting sight that draws visitors from all over the world. Once at the teahouse, consider sampling their tea. They offer a variety of teas at different prices, or you can opt for a tea set for two, which includes several traditional sweets - an experience many travellers enjoy.
To make the most of your trip, it’s best to arrive in the late afternoon so you can enjoy both the sunset and the magical night-time scenery. Though the area can be crowded, Jiufen’s beauty makes it well worth the visit.
Getting there: From MRT Ximen Station, take Bus 965 and get off at Jiufen Old Street.
